What Is Static Hash?

Static hash is hash where the trichomes are separated from the plant using static electricity. Trichomes are the small resin glands on the flowers, and this is where most of the cannabinoids and terpenes are found. When the trichomes are collected and pressed, you get hash.

The name comes from the method. Instead of water and ice, as with bubble hash, dry sifting and static electricity are used to pull the finest and cleanest trichomes free. The result is a light and often very clean hash with a soft, slightly crumbly texture.

First, the dried flowers and leaves are shaken over fine screens so the trichomes fall through. This is called dry sift. Static electricity is then used to lift the lightest trichomes up and away from plant dust and small pieces of leaf. The more times this is repeated, the cleaner the material becomes.

Finally, the trichomes are pressed together into hash. Because no water or solvents are used, static hash keeps much of its natural aroma and flavour.

Dry sift is hash made by dry sifting alone. Static hash is basically dry sift that has been cleaned further with static electricity, which is why it is often cleaner and stronger.

Bubble hash is made with ice water, where the trichomes are knocked loose in the cold and collected in fine bags. La Mousse is a soft and airy type, and Piatella is a creamy hash with a high content. The colour tells you something, but not everything. Good static hash is usually light and has a clean, fresh aroma. The texture should be crumbly to slightly mouldable and not full of plant dust.
